Work at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton was recognised nationally at a prestigious award ceremony last week.
Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust won a Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value in Healthcare award for their innovative mobile app for parents and carers of young children, HANDi paediatric app.
The HANDi app for mobile phones or tablets won in the category for best use of IT, with its easy-to-use programme offering high quality health information for parents with concerns about their children.
NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS NEW Devon CCG) worked in partnership with local NHS hospitals and trusts to launch this innovative app for parents and carers in the North, East and West Devon area in 2015.
The app was designed as a way to reduce the number of children and young people who visit A&E but need no treatment.
It was developed by paediatric consultants and gives parents access to home care plans, as well as GP and hospital clinical guidelines, for the most common childhood health care concerns.
The app contains information about when and how to ask for help, along with what to expect when your child is being assessed.
Dr Shelagh McCormick, GP in Plymouth and Western Locality Chair of NHS NEW Devon CCG said: “When we first saw a demonstration of the app in 2015, we were extremely impressed and we are proud to have been using it across North, East and West Devon for the last two years.
“We know parents generally don’t want to take their children to A&E unless it’s absolutely necessary – but often they end up there because they are not sure what else to do.
“We hope this app gives parents more confidence in dealing with the more minor conditions themselves at home.
“Of course, parents will be advised to seek further help where necessary. This app is really about ensuring children are cared for in the most appropriate environment for their condition.”
The HANDi paediatric app is available to download for free onto any Apple or Android smartphone or tablet.
