National screening

National screening

We will all have various health checks throughout our lives. These fall into two categories: screening and testing.

Screening is a way of checking apparently healthy people using a test to identify those who may be at increased risk of a disease or condition.

In addition to screening tests are offered to entire populations or groups of people, there are a wide range of medical tests that your doctor may recommend for you on an individual basis.

These tests aren’t automatically offered to everyone because they may only apply if you have a certain condition, are at risk from one, or display specific symptoms.

If you’re registered with a GP, you'll automatically receive invitations for relevant screening tests throughout your life. You don’t have to take up these invitations, but think hard before you turn them down. All screening tests are scientifically proven to be effective and could mean that a serious condition is spotted early, when it may be easier to treat.
